New rules will tighten manatee regulations in Kings Bay

Twenty-two (22) years ago, I started diving and teaching diving at Crystal River Florida. In those days the scuba industry was welcome at Crystal River.

In recent years the water visibility and the welcome for scuba divers may have diminished.

  • The Fish and Wildlife, should not be be 'peace officers' (hall monitors) for the Save the Manatee Charity.
  • The Save the Manatee Charity should lose its charitable tax exemption for political tampering.
  • Boat operators should have insured, certified Divemasters in the water with snorkelers and every manatee snorkeler should be 'certified skin divers'
  • Kayaks should be registered as boats and the dive flag laws enforced.

*I would pay to see anyone strong enough to 'hopscotch' to a manatee in full dive gear . Capt. John

We will be diving less at Crystal River this year. We now conduct classes in the Northeast, Central and Southwest Florida State Parks that allow diving and dive training. Some of the sites we dive are Alexander Springs Federal Park, Blue Springs State Park , Crystal River Federal Park, De Leon Springs State Park, Forty Fathom Grotto, Weeki Wachee State Park and Devil's Den. Deep dives are at Blue Grotto and Forty Fathom Grotto,The fees for fresh water spring and Florida attractions are approximately $20.00/$50.00 per student per day. Sites may be closed to diving or have restrictions at certain times.

Diver bubbles are at sound-pressure levels that barely reach the manatees' audiogram thresholds. Findings suggest that the manatee's vision is poor and is not likely to be their primary sense. Manatees are deaf and dumb.

DIVER BUBBLES DO NOT SCARE MANATEES and SHARKS or ALLIGATORS. Ask anyone who says that to "Prove It". (An Alligator Night Dive is available to them, ) Manatees may hear bubbles from cavitating boat motor propellers. Boat propellers kill manatees. To fade the heat, boat tour operators point their fingers at divers.

This just of horrible Manatee Abuse

Travel in Florida

Fish and Wildlife is advising snorkelers, kayakers, hikers, hunters, fishers, and golfers to take extra precautions and keep alert for alligators while in Citrus, Osceola, Polk, Manatee, Orange and Dade counties. They advise people to wear noise-producing devices such as little bells on their clothing to alert but not startle the alligators unexpectedly.

They also advise the carrying of pepper spray in case of an encounter with an alligator. It is also a good idea to watch for fresh signs of alligator activity. People should recognize the difference between small young alligator and large adult alligator droppings. Young alligator droppings are smaller and contain fish bones and possibly bird feathers.

Adult alligators droppings have little bells in them and smell like pepper spray.
