Big Fish!
Capt. Richard Daniel and son Hunter nice Grouper boys!
Cold, Cold, Cold! Water temps have dropped to the 60's so it's time to dust off the old wetsuit. Several weeks of high winds have kept many of us ashore.

Fishing is still very hot when you can get out.

Let's go diving.

Capt. John's Get Rich Scheme Number Three

Motel Hell and How Capt. John gets even!

We had a great time in the Keys diving the Spiegel Grove Wreck, the Eagle Wreck, Crocker Reef, Davis Reef, Christ of the Abyss and even the Marine Lab in Key Largo. Visibility was great, currents for the most part good. Lots of big fish on the wrecks, lots of things to do and see! We had a great time celebrating my pal, Russell Gartner's wedding and had a great Thanksgiving meal with the Gartner family.

But as in every Garden of Eden, there were snakes in this paradise. The hotel Tropical Reef Resort is a dump, with early Salvation Army furnishings and bugs up the wazoo. The hotel management ripped me off for almost $150.00, and pissed off the 35 or so of us there, for one reason or another, mostly for overcharging on pre-arranged rates and crappy accommodations.

So, I got ripped off by the Tropical Reef Resort in Islamorada (keys), they over charged me for my room.
The TripAdvisor.com, (TripAdvisor, Inc. provides a comprehensive travel search engine and directory that helps consumers research their travel plans via the web
) has 26 negative reviews on the Tropical Reef out of 36. The negative reviews outline a history of "bait and switch" tactics, breach of contract, dishonest dealings and unhealthy living conditions. See www.tripadvisor.com Had I read the reviews there first, I would have not stayed at this hell hole.

What is interesting is that there are 19 other hotels listed in Islamorada on Trip Advisor pages. Most do not have reviews, 7 have bad reviews amid good reviews. The worst reputation is the Tropical Reef Resort with 26 bad reviews, the next worst is the La Jolla with 6 bad reviews. I question the 10 good reviews for Tropical Reef as no other hotel listed in Islamorada has more than 20 reviews total. The number one hotel in Islamorada is the Casa Morada has only 6 (great reviews).

As a former cop and private investigator for 30 years, I hate liars, rip offs and thieves. More important than me being had by these bastards, is they ruined Russell Gartner's wedding/honeymoon and ruined Thanksgiving too. For that they deserve, "grief and woe of biblical proportions".....and Capt. John is on the case!

To have some fun and send my well wishes to the Tropical Reef Resort I have rewritten their website to
http://www.scubatampa.com/TropicalReef.html I will move this off of my site this month to a new domain name similar to tropicalreefresort.com (their domain name) and every time their site comes up in a search engine, so will mine. My hope is that I will be hearing from their attorneys and I can get back the $150.00 they have stolen from me, get the staff fired and turn the Resort into a parking lot. Each month I have a little something in mind for these folks, so be sure to read the ongoing saga....

How can you have some fun with this? You could write the Tropical Reef Resort at their e-mail address
IKE500@aol.com and tell them you read this article here and based on it you would never in your life stay there, send a copy to me.

TIPS - DIVING AND WATER SAFETY -- Hypothermia --

1 - An average adult person has a 50/50 chance of surviving a 50 yard swim in 50 degree F water.

2 - A 50 year old person in 50 degree F water has a 50/50 chance of surviving for 50 minutes.

How can divers survive cold water?

1 - Don wetsuits (at least half a suit, pulled down to the waist) at the dock, in case of a boating accident, wetsuits provide floatation and warmth.

2 - Heat is lost most in the head, neck and shoulders, make sure the head is covered, a hood is desirable, but a hat will do. Keep your face out of the water. Heat loss also occurs in the armpits and groin, keeping those areas covered is also important

3 - Staying still in the HELP position (head high, knees to chest) or in the HUDDLE position (huddling with other survivors) and by wearing a PFD (life vest) can increase survival in 50 degree water from two hours (the survival rate for a person swimming or treading water without floatation) to seven hours -- add a wetsuit and hood survive up to fourteen hours.

Knowing how to survive in cold water is important to boat divers as we enter the winter months.

SS Republic may yield $150 million! It lay in darkness at the bottom of the Atlantic for almost a century and a half, guarded only by the occasional shark. Now the 150-year-old steamship has a visitor: a robot bristling with lights, cameras and mechanical arms that is picking its way through the wreckage, hauling up a fortune in gold and silver coins, eventually perhaps 30,000 of them...Go to "SS Republic may yield $150 million"
