When Special Forces Medic Nicholas Bortnick rescued Bodhi his ears and tail had been cut off by his owner and was being trained to fight. Afghanistan dogs are considered unclean by the Taliban. They may be used as target practice, blown up, run over, or starved. Their only value is to be used in dog fighting, a miserable so-called sport for which dogs’ ears and tails are cut off to enable them to be more competitive fighters. The dogs who find their way into our soldiers’ compounds and into their hearts, are often left behind to suffer terribly when the soldiers must move on. “Even though I rescued Bodhi, he has rescued us in a sense. The morale of the entire unit has been lifted with him around. He has become part of our brotherhood." Nick Bortnick, a Sunsation Diver Alumni, is the step son of friend Richard Blunt, Attorney and Sunsation Diver Alumni. |

SSI and Skin Diver Magazine decided to recognize these people at a grand and formal cocktail party at DEMA, the world’s largest diving show. Nikon cameras offered their award-winning team to put together a professional presentation of underwater images, and the first Platinum Pro5000 Diver party was held in 1993 |

The roots of the Platinum Pro 5000 Diver level go back to 1992, with the introduction of the SSI Century Diver card, the first card in the industry earned for making 100 dives. It was such a hit that SSI announced it would create additional cards for 500 and 1000 dives. Bill Gleason from Skin Diver Magazine proposed that there should be a card recognizing the most experienced divers, those with 5000 dives. Bob Clark, founder of SSI, thought this was an outstanding idea.
